How to choose the optimal material for your conveyor application

Depending on your intended application, certain material properties can work together to create an ideal conveyor belt for your particular application.

Conveyor belt is one of the important parts of the conveyor system that contributes to the development of the industrial field. It is widely used for material distribution, transportation and handling in warehouses, assembly lines and many other places such as airports. Conveyor belts are used in various industries such as manufacturing and packaging industry, food manufacturing industry, power plants, textile industry, etc.

At Intech, we manufacture a wide range of conveyors to suit different material conveying applications. When optimizing your conveyor performance, choosing the correct material is critical, different applications require different materials.

Conveyor material selection requirements include:

Match material properties with conveyor application requirements. The first step in choosing the right material for your conveyor is to consider what will be required during the conveying process.

- Strength and durability

For many applications, rubber conveyor belts simply aren't durable enough to get the job done. For applications requiring high strength, steel conveyor belts present the perfect solution and ideal strength-to-weight ratio. Choosing a stainless steel alloy with high strength allows you to manufacture a conveyor belt suitable for the conveying task.

- Anticorrosion

If your conveyor will be exposed to corrosive substances such as harsh cleaning chemicals, you will want to choose a material that is highly resistant to corrosion to ensure the longevity of your conveyor. For maximum corrosion resistance, carefully consider the right type of conveyor belt to ensure its durability.

- Compatible operating temperature

For most temperature ranges, a stainless steel belt of any alloy will work perfectly. For extremely high temperature ranges, you may want to consider a material that is more suitable with a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Commonly used conveyor materials

Conveyor materials must be durable, long-lasting and resistant to a wide range of temperatures, humidity and chemicals. There are 5 main materials that conveyor belts are made of: thermoplastic, metal, rubber, fabric, and leather. Plastics include polyester, polyvinyl chloride, silicone and polyethylene. The metals are stainless steel and carbon steel, and the fabric is cloth or cotton. The most popular material is rubber composite because it is flexible, resistant, smooth and seamless.

It also doesn't have any holes or openings. To increase strength, many belt materials contain additives, including fabric, steel, polyester, or fiberglass. Many flat belts are actually composed of a core material and a sheath. These belts are part of many different types of conveyors, including trough, inclined, horizontal, food grade and overhead conveyors, but they are not intended for use in chain, pneumatic or screw conveyors.

Top 5 types of conveyor belts in common use today:

Conveyor belts are one of the most versatile types of industrial equipment. When specified and installed, they can improve productivity, efficiency and safety. Below are the types of conveyor belts commonly used today:

1 - Belt Conveyor

Belt conveyors are one of the simplest types of conveyors. It moves parts from one end to the other. Speed can be changed with a variable speed actuator. Their simplicity makes them one of the most popular types of conveyors available. We will have PVC, PU or rubber conveyor belts.

2 - Gravity Roller Conveyors

Gravity roller conveyors are also among the simplest, they are very affordable. A series of rollers are mounted on a side frame providing a rolling surface. When mounted on an incline, the components move on their own.

However, if using gravity conveyors for parts of different sizes and weights can be more challenging, you will need to control the speed and angle. Parts running into each other can cause damage. But compared to carrying parts from point A to point B, gravity rollers are often a great starting point. It's a very simple productivity improvement.

3 - Chain conveyor

Floor mounted chain conveyors are well suited for heavy items. They are especially useful for items with uneven bottom surfaces. Chain conveyors provide two or three points of contact at the bottom of the load. As the chain moves, it carries the product forward. Currently, there are stainless steel chain conveyors, plastic chains, plate chains are the most commonly used.

They are used to carry pallets and large industrial containers. This is a common application in auto factories. They are heavy duty and usually move at a slow speed.

4 - Motorized roller conveyor

What will happen if we put the motor inside the rollers? These modern engines are at the heart of today's sophisticated distribution centers. Roller conveyors use one or more motor-driven rollers per zone to create a series of zones along the conveyor.

5 - Motorized overhead conveyor

This is considered one of the most common types of conveyor systems, which is an overhead conveyor with trolleys connected by chains. Overhead Conveyors are the type of material handling system installed in most high volume production facilities, they are especially needed in the automotive manufacturing industry,
